BR Standard 4 2-6-0: 76084 was out shopped at Horwich works in April 1957. It was one of a class of 115 built between December 1952 and October 1957. They were allocated to engine sheds the length and breath of the country and proved to be popular locomotives with high route availability.
Although designed as mixed traffic locomotives they were mostly used on freight duties. 76084 was initially allocated to Lower Darwen in Lancashire and was based in the North West throughout its short working life. The locomotive saw service at Lancaster (Green Ayre) Skipton, St.Helens(Sutton Oak) and finally Wigan (Springs Branch).
Records show that 76084 was typical of the class being mainly used on freight with relatively few recorded passenger workings. In the 1960's the onset of Dieselisation, the Beeching Axe and the transfer of freight from rail to road ensured that the Standard4 2-6-0's saw less than 15 years service. Indeed 76084 worked for only 10 years before being the last of the class to be withdrawn from service in December 1967 and placed into store;
In April 1968 the locomotive was towed to Dai Woodham's scrapyard in Barry, South Wales to be cut-up.76084 languished in Woodham’s scrapyard in Barry from April 1968 to January 1983. It was then purchased by Phillip Rollins and subsequently moved to Retford. His intention was to restore it to working order there. Although the locomotive was kept in good condition little restoration work was done. After Mr. Rollins death in 1997 76084 was purchased by a group of enthusiasts.
Shortly afterwards the 76084 Locomotive Company Limited was formed and the locomotive was moved to Ian Storey’s works near Morpeth, Northumberland. Restoration work began immediately. The Company intends to restore 76084 to main line running order with a home base on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. This will not preclude its use on other privately owned railways.
